How To Clean Out Your Closet For The New Year

Hello Fashionistas! Welcome to today's blog post! Today I am going to be sharing with you 7 of my top tips on how you can clean out your wardrobe for the new year!

With 2022 wrapping up and 2023 coming up soon, this is the perfect time to switch up your wardrobe! By cleaning out and decluttering what you don't need anymore, you're making room for new clothing pieces!

This can be a hard process for some people, because they feel as though they don't have enough clothes to get rid of a lot of them! And no worries - if you are that person, take it slow! You can declutter your closet over time and build up new pieces as you go!

And for those who have a ton of clothes they don't like/don't wear anymore, this is the perfect time for you to "go out with the old and in with the new!"

So, without further ado, let's get into the tips!

What You'll Need:

  • Trash bag(s)
  • Duster/wet-wipes

Step 1: Analyze

What is the current state of your wardrobe/dresser? Is everything easy to see? Are shirts in one section and pants in another? Analyze what is going on before you begin the cleanout!

Once you've done this, think about what clothing pieces you wear the least! This is just in general! You don't need to take anything out yet, just think about it. Do you hate wearing skirts, but have a large amount of them? If there is a certain clothing piece that you have and absolutely despise wearing, keep that in mind!

Step 2: Clear It Out!

This is the step we all dread but is oh so crucial! Start by taking out absolutely every piece of clothing that you have from your wardrobe/dresser! This will help you better analyze the situation and help you realize how much clothes that you actually have!

Step 3: Time To Do Laundry

If you're anything like me, there are clothes in your wardrobe that you haven't worn in quite a while! So, if they've been collecting dust, it is a good idea to go ahead and do a load of laundry! (Also, this is a great step to do if you know you are going to be donating any of your clothes!)

Step 3: Start Organizing

We don't have to go completely Marie Kondo with this step, but we do need to have a basic organization method! So, let's figure out how to do this!
  • Separate shirts, pants, skirts, undergarments and swimwear from each other
  • Next, look through each individual pile one by one and take out pieces that you don't like or never wear. Put all of these items in a "don't want" pile. We'll think about whether or whether not we'll donate them later.

Step 4: Cleaning

We're almost done! At this point with everything cleared out of your closet and put neatly into piles, it's a good idea to wipe down your closet/dresser to give it a clean slate and to get rid of any dust!

Step 5: Time To Get Rid Of Some Things! (optional)

The reason why this step is optional is because if you absolutely like everything in your closet, you don't need to do this step! But, if you are a person that has clothing that don't fit anymore, you don't like, or that you're just plain tired of - put them in a trash bag!

Now that those certain clothes are placed in a trash bag, it's time to figure out what we're going to do with them! There are 3 options:

  1. Give them to a younger sibling, family member or a friend who you know wears the same size and would appreciate them
  2. Donate them to a local Goodwill or thrift-store!
  3. If these clothes are really good quality or are name-brands, you can sell them on sites like Poshmark or Depop! These are great sites to sell your clothes on to make some extra cash!
All 3 options are equally great, so figure out which one works best for you!

Step 6: Putting Everything Back!

We can't forget about the clothes we have laying around in piles! We need to put them back in our closets/dressers neatly. Keyword: "Neatly"

Cleaning out your wardrobe indicates a fresh start, and if you want 2023 to be organized, your closet needs to be organized too! So don't just throw everything in there  - make sure there is some method to the madness!

Need some inspo? I got you!

  • You can organize everything by color
  • You can organize everything by style/aesthetic
  • You can organize everything by the event/setting (ex: casual, fancy, work)

 Extra Tip!

One great tip you can start using this upcoming year, is placing your hangers all in one direction, and then once you wear an item, reverse the hanger. This helps you because in the next year (2024) you will know what clothing you wore, and what you didn't! That way, you can get rid of the clothes you didn't wear a little bit easier!

Will you be cleaning out your closet for 2023?
