Afrocentric Fashion 101: How To Style Clothing Like An African Queen

Hello Fashionistas! Today's post is all about Afrocentric Fashion! This term may be something you've never heard of before because it isn't very often used in the media, but this style has been around for quite a while!

So, what is Afrocentric Fashion? According to Encyclopedia.com, Afrocentric Fashion refers to the apparel traditions of multicultural Africa! This can explain the vibrant colors and bold designs!

If you have heard of Afrocentric Fashion before, you likely are able to recognize it by the head wraps/turbans, long skirts and the natural hairstyles!

I personally am in love with this style and would love to incorporate more pieces into my wardrobe that feature the designs and patterns! Afrocentric Fashion is also a great way to show some love to your heritage because it dates back way before even the 1960s, although it was most popular between the 1960s and 1970s!

So, now that you've been equipped with some great information and history on this style, how about we get into the inspiration and styling tips? Also, if you aren't already - make sure you are following the blog and subscribed to the email list, so you never miss a new post!

Styling Tip #1: Always Have A Pattern

Okay, so first things first - can we discuss how absolutely gorgeous this jumpsuit is? This look is so versatile, and I can see a businesswoman wearing this to work, or even a girl wearing this on a walk along the beach. Literally, so cute!

Patterns are one of the main ways that you can distinguish a look as Afrocentric, so if you want to show off your heritage in your clothing, make sure there is a pattern somewhere in your outfit!

Styling Tip #2: Have Fun With It!

You don't have to have a fully dolled up look 24/7! There are plenty of clothing items that feature these designs that aren't dresses or jumpsuits, so you can still be casual while sporting these designs! Also, do you see the shoes this model is wearing? These tie in perfectly with this style and I really love how laidback the entire look is!

Styling Tip #3: Have The Same Colors Featured Throughout The Entire Outfit

One thing about Afrocentric Fashion is that you don't have to stick yourself into one box! You can wear multiple patterns at once and still create a really beautiful, ethnic look!

The only reason I say make sure that the clothing features the same colors is so that the overall outfit will look cohesive, and it won't look like you just threw anything on! Because although there is a lot of freedom with this style, you still want to make your ensemble make sense!

Styling Tip #4: Make It Elegant!

If you're not sure where to go with this style, a simple way to go is just making your outfits classy and elegant! You don't have to do too much! Adding a simple pattern, pairing it with a solid color piece and adding pops of color here and there is perfectly fine too!

I think that this look is absolutely perfect, and I wouldn't do anything else to it! There is just something about it that screams "brave" to me and I can definitely see a woman wearing this outfit to any event!

Styling Tip #5: Have A Matching Makeup Look

If you want to bring some of that boldness from your outfit to your face, a simple way to do this is by wearing makeup that compliments your outfit! Whether you do that by wearing a bold lipstick, bold eyeshadow or both is up to you! You can make these looks as fun or as toned down as you like!

Styling Tip #6: Wear Your Natural Crown (or a hairstyle like it)

Afrocentric Fashion is all about showing off your natural state and how proud you are in your own skin, your body, etc! Another big part of our history is how we do our hair! Trying out new hairstyles, wearing your hair in intricate braids, or even doing a classic fro is something that is native to Afrocentric Fashion and another way that you can show off your culture!

Styling Tip #7: Don't Feel Like Doing Your Hair? Try A Headwrap

Headwraps are an awesome way to show off your culture, and great excuses to wear if you're having a bad hair day as well! Also, I really love these because they feature the same bold colors and patterns that Afrocentric clothing does, so it is quite easy to pair them with your outfits!

If these seem a little intimidating figuring out how to actually wear them, they are plenty of tutorials on YouTube and they even have some already pre-wrapped!

Styling Tip #8: Big & Bold Jewelry

Another way to show off some Afrocentric style is to showcase it through your jewelry! Earrings being one of the most popular ways to do so! There are plenty of places where you can shop earrings similar to the one featured (like Etsy) and having jewelry like this is great for when you are wearing a plain outfit, because you are still showing off some of your style!
