Hey everyone! Today's post is all about How To Avoid Following Trends. Fashion is all about trends, so why exactly are we talking about avoiding them?
Well, with fashion when you are constantly following new trends and buying new clothing, it can add up!
I'm not saying you can't follow a trend to find your personal style (Ex: soft girl, grunge, e-girl, baddie, etc) but this does mean that you shouldn't follow every new trend you see!
Why? By doing this you will never find your personal style and you'll end up with a closet full of clothes that you'll never wear! Plus, you aren't leaving a good eco-footprint by doing this!
No need to worry though, because in this post I'll be spilling my top tips on how to avoid following trends! Before we move on, make sure you follow the blog and sign up on the email list so you never miss a new post!
1. Find Ways To Style The Clothes You Already Own
We all have many different varieties of clothing! Jeans, t-shirts, dresses, etc! Don't feel like you always need to style that same t-shirt and cargo pants together every single time you wear those clothing pieces! Doing this, you'll always feel like you never have enough clothes, but in reality - you're just not utilizing the possibilities that they have!
I challenge you to wear a shirt you always wear with the same pair of jeans, to wear with something else you own. Once you start to mix-and-match pieces, you'll realize just how many possibilities that they have!
Ex of mixing-and-matching the same item (flannel jacket) in different ways:
See the flannel used in both pictures? Both women are wearing the same style flannel shirt but are using it in different ways! The first picture has a more stylish, work look and the 2nd photo has a more casual look! This is a great example of using one clothing piece to its full extent!
2. Stop Shopping "Just Because"
Okay... we (including me) are all guilty of this one! "This shirt is on sale, so I might as well buy it just because-" but guess what? It's likely you will barely ever wear that shirt!
We are wasting so much money buying things "just because" without even thinking about it! A key step in avoiding following trends is becoming a
smart shopper. Once you learn how to do this, you will never spend your money on something that you'll never wear. Here are some questions you can ask your self before buying clothing:
"Does this match my aesthetic?"
"Do I already have something similar to this?"
"Is this worth the cost?"
"Can I find this item somewhere cheaper?"
"Will I wear this more than one occasion?"
Once you are able to answer all of the questions above, then you can give yourself the go-ahead on buying something! Not only will this save your wallet, but it will also save you from having clothing pieces that don't even match your style!
3. Mood Boards
If you've followed me for a long time (to all my OG's, I see you!) you know that I have mentioned these quite a couple times! And this is because, they are SO helpful. If you aren't sure what your style is and what you should be looking for when shopping, then creating a mood board is a must! The simplest way to do this is to log onto Pinterest, type in '(insert your aesthetic here) outfits' once you do this, just start pinning the outfits you like into a board. Once you're finished, look for some key things in the outfits like....
"Is there a consistency in the colors?"
"Are there certain clothing pieces being worn?" (ex: mini skirts, cardigans, oversized hoodies)
Once you're able to answer those questions about that certain aesthetic, whenever you go shopping refer back to that mood board! Doing so, you can buy outfits based on what you see and never spend on something that doesn't match the look that you are going for!
4. Wait Until The Trend Has Died Down
I personally love this tip so much! This is because a lot of times if we see celebrities wearing a certain outfit and then seeing friends wearing that same aesthetic, It's so easy to jump on the train and do the exact same thing, BUT if you give yourself a chance to wait until the trend is dead, you are able to see if you actually like it or not. It's easy to follow every single fashion trend you see just because your favorite celebrity or everyone at school is doing the same thing, but if you wait to see if it is actually for you or not, you are able to not only save money, but also be more original since you aren't just hopping onto the bandwagon.
5. Invest In Classic Clothing
When you think of classic, you immediately think of boring, right? But wearing "classic" clothing pieces isn't actually as bad as you think! When we invest in the classic pieces like plain white t-shirts, jeans, or a simple pair of sneakers we are opening up a world of opportunity. Why? When you own classic pieces you can pair them with whatever you want to your liking! This helps you avoid buying so much clothing, but instead using what you have to make a trend your own.
Here's an example: Say you are going for the "Soft girl" aesthetic. You own a pair of jeans and simple top. Instead of going straight to the store and buying a white pleated skirt or a baby tee, you can use what you have and instead pair it with items like barrettes, headbands, and soft makeup.
We have now reached the end of today's post!
What did you guys think? Would you rather stay following trends or start making them your own? Let me know down in the comments!👇
